ORLAN is one of the most important French artists internationally recognized.
She is not tied to any one material, technology or artistic practice. She uses sculpture, photography, performance, video, 3D, video games, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and robotics (she has created a robot in her own image that speaks with her voice) as well as scientific and medical techniques such as surgery and biotechnology… to question the social phenomena of our time.
ORLAN created the magazine Art-Accès Revue on minitel, ORLAN founded and organised the International Symposium of Performance and Video in Lyon.
ORLAN constantly and radically changes the data, deregulating conventions and ready-made thinking.
She opposes natural, social and political determinism, all forms of domination, male supremacy, religion, cultural segregation, racism…
Always mixed with humour, sometimes parody or even grotesque, her work questions social phenomena and challenges pre-established codes.

In 2003 ORLAN was made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the Minister of Culture Jean-Jacques Aillagon.
In 2010 she was honoured with the medal of Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite by the Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand.
In 2015, ORLAN had the honour of being invited to a residency at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, USA, as a researcher and artist.
In 2016, ORLAN was awarded the E-reputation prize, designating the most observed and commented on artist on the web.
In 2017 ORLAN was awarded the Female Excellence Award for all her work as an artist by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 2018, ORLAN received the 100 Heroines Award by The Royal Photographic Society.
In 2019, ORLAN is honoured with the special Woman of the Year Award, given by Prince Albert II of Monaco and she is appointed Professor Emeritus of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.
In 2019, ORLAN is awarded the Golden Panda Photography Awards by the Chengou Award Image Museum
In 2020, ORLAN is honoured with the medal of the National Order of the Legion of Honour at the rank of Chevalière by Minister Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin
In 2021, ORLAN wrote her autobiography “ORLAN, STRIP-TEASE: TOUT SUR MA VIE, TOUT SUR MON ART” published by Gallimard.
In 2021, ORLAN received the François Morellet Prize for this autobiography.
In 2022, ORLAN exhibits at the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain des Abattoirs in Toulouse to present her Manifeste ORLAN, Corps et Sculptures.
In 2022, ORLAN presents at the Picasso Museum in Paris, Les femmes qui pleurent sont en colère.
